This American actress grew up with younger sister Susannah Kay and older sister Melissa Lynn in Houston (Texas). Her father is chemical engineer William John "Bill" Garner and her mother is English teacher Patricia Ann (girls name: English) from Oklahoma, who grew up poor. She and her family relocated to Princeton (West Virginia), Calgary, Alberta (Canada) and Charleston (West Virginia) due the job of her father at the Union Carbide.


She meets actor Scott Foley on the set of ''Felicity'' in 1998 and both started an relation in april 1999. The couple marries on 19 october 2000 and their marriage lasts for 4 years until their divorce on 30 march 2004. She started an relation with ''Alias'' co-star Michael Vartan in august 2003, after their meeting on the set. Their relation lasts for seven months until they seperate in march 2004. She started an relation with American actor/director Ben Affleck in september 2004, after their meeting on the set of ''Daredevil''. The couple is engaged on 17 april 2005 and Ben Affleck asks for her hand with a Neil Lane eternity band with round diamonds. The couple marry on 29 june 2005 with a private ceremony at the Parrot Cay resort on the Turks and Caicos Islands. Their marriage lasts for ten years until their divorce in may 2015. Their daughter Violet Anne was born on 1 december 2005 and daughter Seraphina Rose Elizabeth was born on 6 january 2009. Their only son Samuel was born on 27 february 2012.


She graduated at the George Washington High School in Charleston in 1990. She studied first chemistry before she changed her study in drama, where in she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Denison University in Granville (Ohio). She was initiated into the sorority Pi Beta Phi in her student time at the university. She studied at the National Theater Institute and the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut in the fall of 1993.


She moves to New York after college because this city attracted her the most as young actress. She was going to study drama at Yale, but did not completed the study because she wanted to work. She worked as hostess who pursued a career in film and television. She notices that her passions for theatre and stage stronger is than her love of science. She pursued a theater career in New York City and earned $150 a week as an understudy in the play ''A Month'' at the Country for Roundabout Theatre Company in 1995. She was cast for her first television role as part of a made-for-television movie ''Zoya'', based on the Danielle Steel novel.


She was the first celebrity spokesperson of Max Mara in 2003 and became sales person of skin care brand Neutrogena in 2007. She is spokesperson for the food  company Luvo since 2012 and did TV commercials for the brand Capital One in 2014. Her production company ''Vandalia Films'' was founded in 2005 and her first film production ''Butter'', was released in American theaters in 2012.

She made her action movie debut as Allison in one episode of the action TV series ''Swift Justice'' (1996) and played Diane Agostini in two episode of the action TV series ''Aftershock: Earthquake in New York'' (1999).


She plays Nurse Sandra in this story about nurse Lt. Evelyn Johnson (played by Kate Beckinsale) who met childhood friends and US Air Force pilots Rafe (played by Ben Affleck) and Danny (played by Josh Hartnett) in ''Pearl Harbor'' (2001). Rafe was shot down over the English Channel during his fight against the Nazis as volunteer with a flight squadron from England. Evelyn and Danny get a relationship in the mean time, when they are transferred to Pearl Harbor for work. Rafe returns to Evelyn in Pearl Harbor after his recovery when he notice that his best friend Danny has a relation with Evelyn. He does everything to get her back even if he must play dirty during the Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor.


She plays Sydney Bristow who is recruited as secret agent for SD-6, a top-secret branch of the CIA in ''Alias'' (2001 - 2006). She was intense trained in espionage and self-defense in order to become an international spy. She discovers that SD-6 part is of a  international rogue agency named The Alliance of 12, who out is to rule the world. She becomes double agent for the real CIA, who works undercover as reporter for a newspaper. Her assignment is to stop SD-6 which is led by evil head Arvin Sloan (played by Ron Rifkin). She gets assistance of handler Michael Vaughn (played by Michael Vartan) and her estranged father Jack Bristow (played by Victor Garber). She fights against various rival agents, rival terrorist groups and traitors while she hides her cloak-and-dagger lifestyle for her friends.


She plays female hired assassin Elektra Natchios in this story about Matt Murdock (played by Ben Affleck) who becomes blind after he is doused with a hazardous toxic waste in ''Daredevil'' (2003). This accident gives him also a heightened "radar sense" that allows him to "see" far better than any man and his remaining senses are also enhanced. He's a respected criminal attorney at daytime who fights crime at night as masked acrobatic martial arts superhero ''Daredevil''.


She plays mysterious female hired assassin Elektra Natchios who a sexy strong  action heroine is with a lethal synthesis of grace and power in ''Elektra'' (2005). She is hired to kill a father and daughter on an abandoned island who are on the run for ninja syndicate ''The Hand'', whose members practice the dark version of the martial art Kimagure. She accidentally meets them on the island, after getting good contact with father and daughter. She decides to spare them and stays together with them in an hut. She protects them after they are attacked by the assassins of ''The Hand''. She kills all members of the ''Hand'' one by one after a bloody battle.


She plays Janet Mayes in this story about a terrorist attack on an American compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where families and FBI Agent Francis Manner (played by Kyle Chandler) are murdered in ''The Kingdom'' (2007). A team of U.S. government agents are sent to investigate the bombing of an American facility in the Middle East. FBI agent Ronald Fleury (played by Jamie Foxx) blackmails the Saudi Arabian consul, in order to get five days investigation time at the location. He gets the assignment to find the responsible terrorists of the bombing, with help of Janet Mayes, agent Grant Sykes (played by Chris Cooper) and Adam Leavitt (played by Jason Bateman). The agents encounter many problems during their investigation, and they are also supported by Colonel Faris Al Ghazi (played by Ashraf Barhom), who advises the team how to act in a hostile environment.


Activism And Charities


She has served on the board of trustees for Save the Children, which is the United States branch of the British children's charity, advocating for early education. She is six years ambassador for Save the Children and visits frequently families who are involved in the organization's Early Steps to School Success program, which coaches families in order to help children learn in the early years. She worked together with Frigidaire as part of her work with Save The Children. She joins the Invest in Us campaign in 2014 and will appear in the PBS documentary which focuses on rural poverty among children in West Virginia in 2015.


Political activities


She spoke at a rally in support of Democratic Congressional candidate Jerry McNerney in Pleasanton (California) in 2006. She donated $25,000 to the campaign of Democratic politician Wendy Davis in 2014.


Anti-paparazzi campaign


She has campaigned for laws to protect her children from paparazzi. She testified alongside Halle Berry on the California Assembly Judiciary Committee in support of a bill that would protect children of celebrities from harassment by photographers in august 2013. The bill was passed in september 2013 and is now California law.


Stalking incident


She was stalked by Steven Burky in 2002, who was eventually arrested in December 2009, after violating a 2008 restraining order. He was charged of two offences of stalking wherein he pleaded not to be guilty, because he has found himself a reason of insanity in march 2010. He ruled insane and was sent to the California state mental hospital. He must stay away from the Affleck family for 10 years and this punishment starts, when he is released from hospital.
